Work out each number problem and tap the right answer before time runs out.

About this game

Quick Sums is a mental-maths game. A short sum appears, such as an addition, a subtraction or a multiplication, and you pick the right answer from the choices before the timer ends.

It practises mental arithmetic fluency, the ability to work with numbers quickly in your head. That fluency is built from basic facts you can recall instantly, so the more you use them, the faster they come.

How to play

  1. Read the sum.
  2. Work out the answer in your head.
  3. Tap the correct answer before the time runs out. The sums get harder as you improve.

Tips

  • Check the operation sign before choosing an answer.
  • Round to the nearest ten to check whether an answer is in the right range.
  • Use number facts you know, such as doubles and tens, to break up bigger sums.

How it adapts

Kids get smaller numbers and simpler sums, like 5 + 5 or 10 × 10. Teens and adults get bigger numbers and mixed operations. The difficulty adjusts to how you play.

Questions

Does it use a calculator?

No. The idea is to work the answer out in your head.

What if I don't know my times tables?

Kids' levels use small numbers and easy facts. The game finds a level where you can succeed and builds from there.

Are the sums the same for everyone?

Each game's puzzles are the same for everyone on a given day, so you can compare scores within your age group.

The research behind it

Mental arithmetic fluency is a well-studied part of numeracy. Practice makes you faster at these sums; we make no claim about school results.
